Denver-based law firm Moye White is merging with intellectual property boutique Trusted Counsel and opening a new office in Atlanta, the first expansion outside of Colorado in the firm’s 45-year history. The Daily Report, ALM’s Georgia-focused publication, covered the announcement in a feature story.
The article, Denver's Moye White Enters Atlanta Through Merger With IP Boutique, was published on September 3. The article is below.
The combination with Trusted Counsel creates the 70-lawyer firm's first office outside of Denver.
Denver-based law firm Moye White is merging with intellectual property boutique Trusted Counsel and opening a new office in Atlanta, the first expansion outside of Colorado in the firm’s 45-year history.
Moye White managing partner Tom List said Trusted Counsel’s expertise and client based offer his firm “an opportunity for us to fill some gaps that we have in our practice in Denver.”
The addition of Trusted Counsel’s four lawyers takes Moye White’s head count to 70.
List said the move will help Moye White enhance its offerings and allow the firms to combine on matters related to real estate and trial law.
“We feel like the combination of the firms will allow Trusted Counsel to not have to refer those types of matters out, and it will only increase the strength of our business section, so we can serve our existing clients and new clients across the country,” he said.
Despite venturing far outside of its Colorado home, List said geography was not a critical discussion point for Moyte White in deciding to open in Atlanta. The increase of remote work due to the pandemic made it an easier decision, he noted. The firms have had a relationship for years, and discussions on the move started in early spring.
“The Southeast has always been a market where we have conducted real estate transactions, in particular,” List said. “Atlanta just seemed like a great market for us to broaden our reach.”
The firm is currently divided into three sections: trial, business and real estate. With Trusted Counsel in tow, Moye White has identified privacy and compliance as two practice areas to prioritize.
“One of the keys to our combination is to be able to provide those services across the two firms,” said Evelyn Ashley, who founded Trusted Counsel and has served as the firm’s managing partner for 17 years prior to the merger.
Moye White may be expanding outside of Colorado for the first time, but List doesn’t have any plans to take the firm nationwide.
“When opportunities present themselves, we try to be prudent in analyzing those opportunities,” he said. “I can’t tell you today that we won’t expand elsewhere, but it is certainly not an objective of Moye White to become a national firm with hundreds and hundreds of lawyers across the country.”
