DENVER (May 27, 2022) – Moye White is saddened to announce that the firm is mourning the loss of founder John E. Moye. Moye was devoted to the firm he built and led for over 40 years, since its inception in July 1976. A deeply committed counselor to his clients, a friend to his colleagues, and a pillar in the community, he will be sorely missed.
“It’s an especially sad day for us at Moye White as we grieve the loss of a man whose principles are deeply embedded in our firm’s culture,” said Managing Partner Thomas List. “John absolutely loved the practice of law and his approach, a combination of intellect, ethics, and compassion is a model for us all and for the many other lawyers who worked with John over the years. We recognize the vast contributions John made as a lawyer, humanitarian, and philanthropist, and in light of his high standards for professional excellence and integrity.”
A respected attorney, professor, lecturer, writer, legal expert, and advisor, Moye built a thriving law firm through acumen, creativity, and a commitment to excellence. With hands-on experience in business planning, formation, and financing, he brought skill, objectivity and passion to his representation of clients.
During a career spanning more than five decades, Moye was Denver’s “Go-To” corporate lawyer, advising and assisting clients in every facet of business law. In 1981, both the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations recognized him as their Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year. He received the Colorado Bar Association’s highest award – the Award of Merit – in 2005. While receiving recognition and honors received throughout his distinguished career, John was characteristically humble. A favorite certificate, situated in the middle of a phalanx of others displayed on his office wall, was an ornate, hand-drawn parody created by a former student which read in part, “to fill out an already ostentatious display of awards.”
John Moye was a commissioner of the Uniform Consumer Credit Code Commission for the state of Colorado, chairman of the Board of Law Examiners, and president of the Colorado Bar Association. Committed to public and community service, John served as chairman of the board of the Denver Urban Renewal Authority, Stapleton Development Corporation, Downtown Denver Inc., and the Colorado Historical Foundation.
“He’s been my partner, confidant, and friend for decades. John was the consummate lawyer whose intellect, ethical standards, and human compassion were a model for us all,” said name partner Ted White. “The legal community is diminished by his loss. We at Moye White are privileged to have practiced law with him and will continue to live up to his high expectations. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family.”
