Episode 2 Synopsis
December 5, 1933, is a beloved holiday in the alcohol beverage industry – it’s the day prohibition ended through the enactment of the Twenty-First Amendment. Decisions U.S. policymakers made 86 years ago still affect how we produce and sell alcohol today.
Prohibition has long been hailed as the failed experiment to tackle the “tied-houses,” or the retail outlets with exclusive relationship to a manufacturer.
With the repeal of Prohibition thirteen years later, the government was left with the important question of “where do we go from here?” Their answer was focused on avoiding tied-house situations and creating the highly regulated schema we know today as the “three-tier system.” By doing so, they pushed the regulations largely to the states, resulting in the patchwork of variable state-by-state regulations existing today, interconnected with the federal and local government authorities to control alcohol.
